The trefoil Catholic Cross has been around since the 12th century and has lasted through wars, invasions and an ecclesial split of historic proportions, and has largely been seen as the "cross of the west".
Perhaps no other cross has seen as much use, as you can find this cross on heraldry, cemeteries and cathedral walls. Many Catholics would hide there "catholic relics" during the Protestant reformation, during a time when the Church of Rome was under it's greatest assault, and many Priests if found preforming religious rites during the French revolution would have faced grave consequences and even death, but never ceased holding to their Faith.
The trefoil Cross represents the sacrifice of Christ, and the "lobbed" ends reflect Gods love. The top head showing God's majesty being above all, the bottom end showing Christ entering into mankind through the incarnation, and the side ends showing God's love reaching across mankind from end to end, from age to age.
