The 3 bar Orthodox Cross has been around since roughly the 4th century and has been the known symbol of Christendom in the east since the time of the early Church.

During the Soviet Union, practice of religion was made illegal and punishments of such practice or adornments included discrimination, imprisonment or death. Despite this persecution many Christian brothers wore their crosses...even to the very end. All for the reverence and worship of God.
The 3 bars on this cross represent the head bar just above where Jesus' head that would have read "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews", the middle bar where Jesus' arms would have been stretched apart, and the slanted footrest, which actually represents humanities choice between salvation and damnation. One side pointing up towards the thief that believed Jesus was the Christ, and the other side pointing down to the thief who cursed both the repentant thief and Jesus.

"O Lord, grant me strength to bear my cross and follow Thee"
